A loss that has shaken us – we mourn Hermann
Hermann Meingast passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday night. His heart has stopped beating – but his mission lives on in our hearts.
He contacted me at the end of February 2022. A few days later, on March 4th, I traveled to Moldova – without knowing what I was getting myself into. I was convinced I would only stay for the weekend.
That one step led to everything.
Thanks to Hermann, we at Be an Angel expanded our activities first to Moldova and then to Ukraine. Without him, none of this would have been possible: the evacuation of over 24,000 people, and aid deliveries worth over $65 million to the front lines.
Hermann was one of the most authentic, humorous, and empathetic people we have ever had the privilege of knowing. With a tiny team of just four people in Moldova, he accomplished incredible things – day and night, without a break, with unwavering determination.
People like Hermann are the heartbeat of humanity in this world.
Children were especially dear to his heart. Their protection, their safety, their future – he fought for them.
We will continue what he inspired us to do.
In his spirit, we ask for your support for the two children’s centers in Ukraine that we support. They help alleviate the traumatic burdens on children and young people and give them new perspectives.
Our thoughts are with his wife, his daughter, his family, and his friends.
Andreas Tölke & the Be an Angel Teams Germany and Ukraine
“We were the Three Musketeers, we didn’t sleep, we froze, and we were hungry. We didn’t think about ourselves for a second, only about each other. The Austrian, the Moldovan, and the German. We always found a reason to laugh at each other and with each other. And we never lost sight of our goal for a second: to save people from a terrible, cruel war.
We didn’t care who these people were. Whether they were good or evil, whether they unleashed their fear and desperate rage on us, whether they were silent and helpless, whether they tried to appear calm.
Now there are only two Musketeers left, and we don’t know what to do with our grief. Two years side by side, shoulder to shoulder, now you’re gone, and we’re alone. We won’t leave your widow and your daughter alone. Two Musketeers and complete strangers helping your family in their time of need.
Thank you to everyone who is carrying on Hermann’s legacy.”
