Interview: Franziska Klün
Lilia, can you tell us about your journey as a designer: How has your vision evolved over time, especially in the current context of the war in Ukraine?
My journey has always been intertwined with my roots in Ukraine, and as a designer, I have constantly sought to explore the dialogue between tradition and modernity. The war has intensified this conversation, forcing me to reflect deeply on the resilience and strength of my country and people. My vision has evolved to focus even more on authenticity – now, my work carries the weight of representing our collective spirit and hope. It’s a reminder of the beauty that survives even in adversity, and that message of renewal persists in my collections.
Your collections continue to be produced entirely in Ukraine. What does that commitment mean to you and the people working with you, especially during such challenging times?
Producing in Ukraine is more than a logistical decision; it’s an act of defiance and a testament to our unwavering belief in the future. For me, it’s about showing that creativity and craftsmanship are alive, no matter the challenges. The team and I feel deeply connected to this purpose — we create not only to survive but to honor our heritage and contribute to the future of Ukrainian culture. Every piece crafted in Kyiv carries the pride of our land, our people, and our strength.

What was your first thought on our idea to team up with Nick Knight?
I was immediately drawn to the idea. Nick’s work has always resonated with me, especially his ability to capture the delicate balance between strength and fragility, which mirrors so much of what we are experiencing in Ukraine. His iconic floral imagery felt like the perfect metaphor for resilience and renewal — elements that are central to my own vision.
What does it mean for you to work with him on this project?
Working with Nick Knight is an honor and a breathtaking creative journey. His artistry brings a layer of depth to the collaboration that transcends fashion. Together, we are creating more than garments – we are telling a story of resilience, of finding beauty in the darkest moments.
Why is this collaboration between Nick Knight, Be an Angel, and Litkovska important and appropriate at this point in time?
The timing of this collaboration feels incredibly natural. The world needs to be reminded of the destruction around us – and the beautiful things that still survive through it all. With Be an Angel, we share a mission to help those most affected by this war, especially children. This collaboration offers a platform to do just that — to use fashion as a voice for change and also gather funds to support actual initiatives that help people. It’s not just a collection, it’s a way to contribute to the healing process of Ukraine.
What message do you hope to convey through this collaboration, and how do you feel fashion can contribute to raising awareness and support for Ukraine?
The message is one of resilience and the enduring power of beauty. Flowers growing through the rubble is an image that speaks to the heart of what we’re experiencing – no matter how difficult the circumstances, life finds a way. Fashion has the unique ability to communicate beyond words, to touch people emotionally. Through this collection, we hope to inspire people to stand with Ukraine, recognize our fight, and support our fight for survival and peace.
How do you hope it will resonate with people, especially in the context of supporting Ukrainian children?
I hope that when people see and wear this collection, they feel a connection to Ukraine – to its people and to its children who are the future of our country. By purchasing these pieces, people are not only meeting a beautiful garment but also contributing to a larger cause, helping the youngest and most vulnerable affected by this war.
What role do you think Ukrainian designers play in maintaining cultural identity and resilience during the war?
Ukrainian designers are guardians of our cultural identity. In times like these, fashion becomes a form of resistance, a way to assert our presence and voice in the world. It’s about preserving our heritage, telling our story, and showing that our creativity and spirit remain unbroken.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes for Ukraine, and how do you see the future of Ukrainian fashion and creativity evolving?
My hope is for victory, peace and for the restoration of our country, where creativity can thrive once again without the shadow of war. Ukrainian fashion has already proven its resilience, and I believe it will continue to grow, fueled by the strength we’ve gained during these times.
