HOPE HOME is a German-Ukrainian pilot project for climate-neutral reconstruction in Ukraine. In the war-damaged village of Pervomaiske, south of Mykolaiv, a public building – the community center – is being restored using local, renewable, and recycled materials.
Instead of concrete, materials like hemp, clay, wood, straw, sheep’s wool, and mycelium are used – resources long known in the region and ideal for fast, affordable, and carbon-free repairs. The goal is to create a habitable, toxin-free, and warm space for gatherings, workshops, and social encounters – a functioning hub for the village community.
The project was initiated by former Berlin senator for culture Adrienne Goehler and is being implemented under the umbrella of Be an Angel e.V. in cooperation with the Ukrainian partner organization HOPE HOME ДІМ НАДІЯ. It combines architecture, science, agriculture, and craftsmanship and aims to serve as a model for other villages in the region.
What has happened so far
Since December 2024, we’ve been active on-site with local partners. Achievements include:
First workshops using hempcrete and clay
Part of the destroyed community center repaired
Windows installed
Hemp walls constructed
Floor tiles funded
More repairs are planned, including using straw-clay mixtures.
Why we need your support now
During reconstruction, it became clear that the community center’s roof contains hazardous asbestos and must be urgently removed and replaced.
The wood for the new substructure is already available.
What’s missing: €5,000 for safe removal, disposal, and installation of a new, non-toxic roof.
Without these funds, the project could stall at a critical point. Reconstruction is already well underway – halting now would be a setback for the whole community.
Donate now to make reconstruction possible
Please support HOPE HOME with a donation. Every contribution helps continue this sustainable project and sends a signal for climate-friendly rebuilding in Ukraine.
